Territory Families, Housing and Communities is committed to improving Aboriginal housing in remote communities through the Remote Housing Investment Package.
Over the past month, a number of new homes have been handed over to tenants living in some of the Territory’s most remote communities – from Ramingining near the coast of East Arnhem Land to Alpurrurulum, 1800 kilometres south-east on the Queensland border in the Barkly region.
Local decision making and community engagement guides the construction of the new homes, giving communities meaningful input into how the program is delivered.
Darryl, Meredith and their sons, Deicmus and Braxton were thrilled to receive the keys to the new three-bedroom home earlier this month in Alpurrurulam. The home was built off the ground as the community is subject to flooding.
In Ramingining, Angeletta, her partner Clinton, and their two children Connielious and Matyarson, moved into a new home right next door to where the children grew up. This new home will give the children their own space and will help maintain a routine and support school attendance.
Joseph, Sifora, Tyren and their dog Rami also moved into a new three-bedroom home in Ramingining. Working as a Cultural Liaison Officer, Joseph is a role model in the Ramingining community and is well-known as the creator of the Black As TV series.
