Making a house, a home in Yirrkala

Eunice has comfortably settled into her new home, with the beginnings of a lawn and a garden starting to bloom, and she could not be happier.

"I find it very good in this home. People come to visit me, do the fellowship like people gathering and singing," she said.

The Murray River North prefabricated home has been built on the site of her former house in Yirrkala.

It is the first of 12 homes agreed through local decision making, to be constructed in Yirrkala under HomeBuild NT, as part of the $1.1 billion remote housing investment package Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes.

The department has also ensured Eunice is surrounded by her family by moving her son into housing next door and her daughter down the road.

"I want my grandchildren near me so we can work together, and look after the garden, look after the place and look after the family,” Eunice said.

"That you gave me this house is so good, so wonderful... I am very happy.

This house is so good, I love it, I love to stay here, because this is a home," Eunice said.
