Martin is learning skills to pass onto the next generation

Martin Dipper has been working for Tangentyere Constructions for more than 12 months, dedicating his time to the Room to Breathe program in his home community of Areyonga.

"I’ve been doing great… yeah, I’m just learning the work," he said.

Martin says he helps his co-workers on the worksites where ever he can, but he’s also grabbing learning opportunities where possible.

"Stuff I learned with this mob, painting and helping doing all the ceilings, I just like to keep on learning.

"When I work, I just keep on thinking myself, how am I going to handle this work, learn different stuff so I can do it better.

I enjoy this job you know, I like the work," Martin said.

It’s particularly important for Martin, because his ultimate goal is to be able to build enough skills to pass on to the next generation.

"I like to learn more and for me, I like to teach the young ones, if they go to school and keep on going on this job.  It’s good to learn…have more knowledge," he said.

To date, 12 homes have been upgraded in Areyonga under the Room to Breathe program, as part of Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes.  Among them was Martin’s home.

He said it was special being able to work on his own home.  He particularly likes the enclosed verandah.

"Another room they made, so I can sit out in the verandah and talk stories," he said.

"For me, I just want to work, live with my family and to share with my family."
