A local Aboriginal business enterprise has been awarded $51.5 million to build 87 homes and extend dozens of existing homes over five years in Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island.
Bukmak Constructions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation, has been awarded the largest single contract under the NT Government’s Remote Housing Investment Package.
The contract also includes extending dozens of existing homes under the Room to Breathe Program.
The huge construction program will help alleviate overcrowding, improve living conditions, provide jobs and economic development, and engage the community through local decisionmaking.
Bukmak Constructions will provide apprenticeship and other training opportunities for residents of the remote island community.
They plan to use services, materials and products from the region and are exploring the potential for a manufacturing and assembly business on the island.
The project, along with other works in the East Arnhem region, opens up opportunities for Territory trades and supply businesses, as well as associated support industries, such as mechanics and catering.
