13 new homes are on the way for Milikapiti, with a $4.2 million tender award announced this week to Territory construction company DT Hobbs.
As part of the same tender, 24 homes will receive extra living spaces through the Room to Breathe program.
This tender is the first of a $12 million plan to continue work to improve housing in Milikapiti, the remote Tiwi Island community with a population of around 470 people.
The joint funding from the Northern Territory (NT) and Australian Governments will go towards construction, refurbishments and upgrades of homes as part of the Remote Housing Investment Package - and is the first stage of a three-year contract.
It’s an exciting time for Milikapiti, as this new work will build on other recently completed projects in the community, including
- six brand new homes built last year
- eight existing homes, which received extensions and upgrades.
Supporting local employment continues to be a high priority for this program, as DT Hobbs has built connections with the Tiwi Islands Training and Employment Board to recruit local people and support local enterprises to deliver this work.
Across the Tiwi Islands, DT Hobbs is also working on building 20 new homes in the nearby community of Pirlangimpi, with six nearing completion.
