Work is underway on the $1.1 billion remote housing program

Work has begun in 21 remote Aboriginal communities to improve housing under Room to Breathe – part of the 10 year $1.1 billion remote housing program, Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes.

Minister for Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy today visited Titjikala to launch the program.

Room to Breathe will provide additional living spaces in remote communities. $10 million was fast tracked for Room to Breathe early works in Budget 2016.

Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes will be guided by local decision-making to meet each community’s needs and will begin to roll out in this financial year. The $1.1 billion program is made up of:

• $500 million for ‘HomeBuild NT’ – to build new homes.
• $200 million for ‘Room to Breathe’ – to build additional living spaces onto existing houses.
• $200 million for repairs and maintenance of houses – additional to existing repairs and maintenance investment.
• $200 million for new government employee housing – to include remote local government recruits.

Budget 2017 included $100 million made up of: $50 million for HomeBuild NT, $20 million for Room to Breathe, an additional $20 million for repairs and maintenance and $10 million for government employee housing.

$44.5 million has been made available in Budget 2017 over two years, to establish new serviced lots to build new houses.For more information go to ourfuture.nt.gov.au
